The beauty of Ishigaki island Okinawa

The first time I ever step my feet in Ishigaki Island of Okinawa, I felt really warm in my heart. It was strange feeling like a Deja vu strike in my mind I thought I have been there before. I felt so familiar with every thing in this island. The sun, the air, the view, the blue color of the sea, the white stone wall surrounding the houses and the smile in every faces of the people which blend in well that have triggered ignoramus happiness in my heart. I said to my self in that moment, "I am in love to this place".
Ishigaki island was just so beautiful.

The people of Ishigaki is genuinely kind. They have easy going life style which make their life is more enjoyable. Ishigaki island is around 229.00 km² with 46,938 people live in there peacefully for over years. The island it self is so small, it is easy for the people who live there to know each other. They have only 1 police station, 1 elementary school, 1 public library, domestic airport and a moss burger. There is no McDonald in the island. You need to fly to Naha to have a Big Mac.
Hirakubo Light house
The landscape and site seeing area are amazing in Ishigaki island. There are a lot of beautiful viewing site and beaches too. One of my favorite viewing site in Ishigaki island is Hirakubo point.  The first time I stood up on that point, my eyes and my mined were opened wide. I felt so peaceful!
The fresh air, the blue sky that merged perfectly in the horizon were just perfect.
This is why Hirakubo is one of my best favorite places in the world.

Ishigaki island also has a few nice surfing breaks. The best swell is always in winter time but during typhoon season in summer some of the reefs can handle up to 5 meters wave. One of my favorite point break is Uganzaki. It has nice right break and in winter time you can enjoy a short tube ride too.
Because Ishigaki is far from Tokyo, not so many surfer from the main land come to ride the break. The would rather going over seas as the flight ticket price isn't so different.

Great news for windsurfers, Ishigaki island is the best windsurfing spot in Asia. It has very strong regular wind blowing in winter time. I was windsurfing instructor for almost 3 years in Kabira Ishigaki island. Those 3 years was my top 10 years of windsurfing time in my life. I have been teaching windsurfing in all over Asia for about 10 years, there was no place had perfect wind like Ishigaki island.
Kite surfing also started when I was there. I was working for Robert Teriitehau windsurf school at that time and one of the most popular Hawaiian kitesurfer came for a short promotion of his kitesurf product, Pete Cabrinha. He came for a few days to test his products.
Windsurfing and kitesurfing in Ishigaki is just awesome.

Well, I think I just drifted my mind back to Ishigaki to deep. It is to me for me to wake up and let the beautiful dream remains still in mind's frame. If you ever go to Ishigaki island, don't forget to share your story with me.
Thank you for reading my post and I wish you to have a nice day.

  2. @autsch6: Yes, indeed we have a fun wave sailing time in Ishigaki. The best time is during winter when the strong north wind is on. The wind goes to 25 knots and some times over. The wave is not so big about 2 meters hight but it's big enough to make double loop. Robert did it perfectly when he was there for the school. Sorry, the picture up there is not in Ishigaki. I couldn't get one from Ishigaki. If you have more question about Ishigaki, you are welcome to ask any time. Thank you for reading my blog n have a good day.

  3. Thanks for sharing. I love reading your story. It made me remember my vacation in Ishigaki two weeks ago.

The blue sky, the nice people, the sea horizon, the white sand and the wind... Yes, everything in Ishigaki is so beautiful and I'm in love to this place too. You know it was raining everyday after I came back to Hong Kong and I really miss the lovely sunshine in Ishigaki.

I guess from your name that you are coming from Bali, right? I was stayed in Club Med Kabira during my vacation and met a GO of water sports team also coming from Bali. He is very nice and gave me a ride on his windsurfing board.

I also had my first attempt at windsurfing there but time is too short for me to learn the basic... It's pity that there's not much opportunity to learn it in HK.

Hope someday I can visit Ishigaki again and go to the Hirakubo light house to have a look.

Please keep posting of your story in Ishigaki!

    Karen

  4. I am heading to Ishigaki soon with my friends from Tokyo. I live in Redondo Beach. I'd like to know a few more spots for surfing. Besides Uganzaki are there other spots? I am also going to Miyako-jima, have you surfed anywhere on that island? Thank you for your help! John

  5. Thank you for sharing your experience about such a beautiful place. I live in Taiwan and want to travel to Ishigaki soon. I kitesurf, surf and SUP and can speak reasonable Japanese. Is there anywhere you recommend to stay that is conveniently located close to the kitebeach and other surfing points? Club Med looks like a great location for kite surfing but is very expensive. Do you know a small local accommodation called Island Club? And where on the island it is located and do you recommend it? Many thanks!! My email is jayrrrr@hotmail.com
